SECTION 1 Stechelberg – Mürren

Introduction

The existing single track Stechelberg–Mürren cable car will be replaced by a new twin track cable car following a slightly re-aligned track. The cable car serves as access to the mountain village of Mürren, it services the ski area of Mürren – Schilthorn, and forms the first of the three cable car sections to the popular destination of Schilthorn – Piz Gloria. The cable car with cabins holding 85 persons each, or an underload of max. 6.8 tonnes, is equipped for operation throughout the year and can be operated remotely.

Cable car system

Name of the system: 85-ATW Stechelberg-Mürren
System number: 71.149
-
Cable car with two cabins in shuttle operation
-
Cabin capacity of 85 persons each, or underload of up to max. 6.8 tonnes
-
16-wheel drive without safety brakes
-
Passenger capacity of 800 persons per hour
-
Max. speed 7 m/sec.
-
Adhesion traction in the valley station (270° loop system)
-
Cable tensioner (basic tension traction cable 72 kN) in the valley station
-
Pylons with a cable elevation of approx. 26 m and/or 38 m from the base point respectively

Operation

The cable car is designed for the transport of persons inside the cabins and for transporting goods as an underload. The passenger capacity is 800 persons per hour in each direction. If goods are transported, the number of persons is reduced accordingly. The system operates both in summer and winter, day and night and can be operated remotely.

Stechelberg valley station

The valley station will be completely rebuilt. The carrier cables are guided via the cable saddle to the carrier cable anchors. The carrier cables are fixed and are attached by means of grouting sleeves at the end of the cable saddle. The traction cable is deflected to the tension weight set by the inclination of the track. The forces are diverted into the concrete foundations via a solid steel construction.
The platforms (platform level) are served by the closed outer and middle platforms and are equipped with automatic sliding doors.
For standard transportation, the underload is automatically attached in the basement (goods level) using a hanging revolving crane. Special loads are attached manually in the basement (goods level).

Mürren mountain station

The mountain station will be completely rebuilt. The carrier cables are guided via the cable saddle to the carrier cable anchors with mooring posts and firmly anchored with 4.5 loopings. The remaining cable is guided via end moorings and anchoring joists into the pile wall.
The circulating main cable is operated by an adhesion drive. The complete main and standby drives are located in the basement. The drive motor and the spur gearing are mounted on a frame that is anchored in the foundations.

Cables

Each track consists of two locked-coil carrier cables with a diameter of 58 mm, which are firmly attached at both stations.
The traction cable has a diameter of 42.5 mm and is made of galvanised strands.
A telephone line is also attached between pylon 1 and the mountain station.

Track and track assembly

The track comprises two supporting pylons and two carriageways with two carrier cables each. Intermediate supports are erected between the stations and the supporting pylons. The position of the carrier cables on the pylon cable shoes is monitored.
The supporting pylons are designed in a steel frame construction.

Cabins

Both cabins can accommodate 85 persons each and are designed for remote operation. The cabin is mounted on a 16-wheel drive with a steel plate hanger. The drive is designed without safety brakes.
The cabins are designed to transport goods as an underload. In the case of automated standard transport, containers up to a max. 2.5 tonnes load capacity and with dimensions of 3,000 x 2,500 x 2,300 mm can be transported. In the case of manual special transport, goods up to a max. 6.8 tonnes and dimensions of 6,200 x 3,000 x 2,300 mm can be transported. Both cabins are equipped with a load measurement gauge so that the passenger numbers can be reduced in line with the goods payload.

Rescue

The system is equipped with an integrated evacuation system. This means that the cabins can always be recalled to the stations. This makes any rescue via the cables redundant.

Electrical equipment

In the case of the electrical drive control, a programmable safety control system is used. The striking feature of this is the high technical safety level with numerous safety relevant functions/monitoring systems that can be implemented.
